Harriet Duff, President, Johnson County, Kansas, requested members receive information regarding the Charter Commission holding a public hearing to address its recommendations to the Board of County Commissioners for County governance. League members are strongly encouraged to attend.
The two amendments subject to voter approval are: (1) Return to partisan elections and (2) expand the Commission to nine. The League was very involved in getting non-partisan election of Commissioners, so opposition to the first is easy for us to defend. The second point has multiple issues, one of which is its expense. There are several other issues that are also likely to be presented.
It is especially important to have League members speak to the issues at the hearing. Having closely followed the process thus far, Delores Furtado has offered to help us by providing the details for the issues and what needs to be said. Statements will be brief and focused AND not confrontational or inciting. If you can attend and will speak, please notify Delores asap so that there can be a clear and coordinated League response.
As soon as date, time, and location are made available, this post will be updated with them.
