Hi ~~first_name~~:

Join us as we prepare to engage and empower voters in 2020 and 2021. Ask Congress to protect the census. Participate in a discussion on diversity, equity and inclusion. Read on to learn more about these opportunities and other ways to engage as we prepare for the general elections.

Protect-the-census
Last week, the U.S. Census Bureau announced it will end field data collection operations by September 30, 2020, a month early. To date, just under 63% of households have responded. COVID-19 has already made door-to-door outreach difficult, and shortening the data collection time frame could lead to lower representation of actual household data and more reliance on computations.

The census is used for critical state and federal funding allotments, determining congressional representation and business decisions. Poorly tabulated census data will affect all communities for the next decade. Read more on the importance of census data here.

Congress can act to protect the 2020 Census by ensuring that provisions requested by the Bureau for funding to complete counting activities and extended deadlines are included in the next stimulus package.

Tell Congress to legally extend the timeline for the 2020 Census and ensure a fair and accurate count.

Election wrap-up

As of Friday, August 7, voters cast 146,996 ballots in Johnson County (approximately 34% voter turnout) and 23,435 ballots in Wyandotte County (approximately 40% voter turnout). Results will be certified August 13 in Johnson County and August 17 in Wyandotte County.

Thirty-five of our members donated more than 200 hours to the Johnson County Election Office opening mailed ballots. Additional members worked the polls and were on-call for the ACLU's Election Protection hotline.

Preview Party powers the vote!

Now that the primaries are over, we are jumping right into preparations for the general elections and beyond. Join us August 25, 7 - 8:30 p.m. via Zoom for a Power the Vote Virtual Preview Party.

This interactive, organizational party will lay the groundwork to engage and empower voters in 2020 and 2021. And, you can win great door prizes!

It's not too early to get ready for Election Day
Make an Election Day plan. Ask 10 friends and family to make an Election Day plan too. Check in with a young person to see if they're registered. If they're not, ask them if they need help registering. These are just a handful of the 100 ways the League of Women Voters suggests you can get ready for Election Day.
