Hi ~~first_name~~:

The election isn't quite over  read on for next steps as well as a feature article on Stacey Abrams's efforts to increase voter participation and a review of Vote411.org statistics this year. We also share resources on the women behind the election, a review of the accomplishments of LWV in 2020 and more. We hope these emails have helped to keep you informed in 2020, and we look forward to your continued readership next year!

Votershavespoken

The election progresses

Across the United States, Electoral College electors met this past Monday to submit their votes. This step locks in the election results, with the last step set for Jan. 6, when Congress meets to certify the vote and declare the winner.

Despite efforts to convince states to certify results that don't reflect the popular vote, and despite the lawsuit by Texas against several other states for alleged voting irregularities, the vote will stand.

As the League of Women Voters tweeted: "The voters have spoken. The results are verified. It is time to allow the country to move on."

AsktheBoard

Send us your questions

On Saturday, Jan. 9, the League is holding a planning session to set the direction for the year. The first portion of the meeting will include a Q&A session in which members can ask the League's board any questions. These questions can range from "How are we doing financially" to "What will we be advocating for in 2020?" Please start thinking of what you would like to know, and send your questions as you think of them to Amber Stenger at president@lwvjoco.org. You'll be able to ask questions during the meeting as well.

If you haven't already, register now for this important meeting. In addition to the Q&A session, we will also break into small groups to discuss two important issues facing our organization, and there will be fun prizes as thanks for your participation.

Stacey Abrams helps drive voter registration in GA

Stacey Abrams has been focused on issues of social justice since she went to visit the governor as a young valedictorian and was almost turned away. More recently, she has led grass roots efforts that have helped to register 800,000 new voters in her state. Learn the questions she asks herself in everything she does in her inspiring 2018 TED Talk here.

Vote411 Overview - the 2020 Election Cycle

Vote411.org had over 7.7 million sessions from Jan. 1, 2020 through Election Day, and nearly 6 million of those sessions included the online voters' guides. Voter guide sessions this year increased 141% over usage in the 2016 election cycle and increased 20% over the 2018 election cycle. These amazing numbers show just how much voters turn to the League to find the information they need for Election Day.

2020 also saw coverage of more than 41,000 candidates in all 50 states and D.C. This represents 20,000 more candidates than the site covered in 2018 and 28,000 more candidates than covered in 2016. This growth in candidate coverage is thanks to you and the growth in the number of Leagues that participated in the voters' guide program.

Finally, we launched the Spanish version of the site this year, making all voter information available to Spanish speakers.

We're thrilled with our progress, and we look forward to continued expansion of coverage with your help.

Stay engaged

Give the gift of membership

Give a special voter in your life the gift of membership to the League of Women Voters. You'll help that someone stay informed and get more involved in our democracy, while continuing to empower, protect and defend voters in the years to come.

The League of Women Voters in 2020

2020 was a challenging year, but the League succeeded on many fronts. Together, we helped drive voter participation, encouraged action to protect the census, commemorated the centennial of the 19th Amendment and so much more. Read this blog for the 20 ways the League empowered voters and protected democracy this year.

The women behind our election

On December 8, the US League hosted a live Women Power the Vote Facebook event featuring three women officials on the frontlines of the election. The one-hour discussion covered the challenges they faced, how they were able to overcome them and aspects of this election cycle that are critical to moving our democracy forward. You can access the recording on Facebook here.

The U.S. Supreme Court won't hear citizenship proof appeal

The U.S. Supreme Court announced on Monday, December 14, that they will not consider an appeal by Kansas to reinstate a law requiring voters to prove their citizenship. Read the full article here.

Become a liaison to advance women's equality

Leslie Sullivan, LWVJoCo's liaison to the Women's Equality Coalition (WEC) for several years, is taking a well-earned break. We need someone to step in and represent us in this important coalition. The time commitment requires an hour each month to attend their monthly meeting, plus additional time for intermittent projects. WEC plans to host events throughout the year. This group is well connected, and the role is an excellent networking opportunity. Learn more about the coalition on their website or their Facebook page, and let Amber Stenger know if you're interested.
