One in Four People Aren't Registered to Vote 😱

Participation is crucial for a functioning democracy. You can help encourage participation. This National Voter Registration Day on September 28, here's our call to action: Take a few minutes to ask three friends or family members to make sure they are registered and their information is current. Just three. That's it. Can we count on you?

More than 20 states have introduced or passed legislation that would ban the teaching of critical race theory. These broadly worded bans could also ban schools from teaching the history of race and structural racism in the US. Join us via Zoom to learn more about critical race theory and confusion about it could affect the education our kids receive.
Our session panelists are:
  • Mará Rose Williams, reporter, Kansas City Star
  • Tyler Curtis, chief development officer, United Methodist Foundation
  • Moderator: Linnaia McKenzie, president, Advocacy and Awareness Group of Johnson County
This session is open to the public. Advanced registration is required.

DEIMoment-HispanicHeritageMonth
Today marks the beginning of National Hispanic Heritage Month, Sept. 15-Oct. 15. We would like to kick off the month by celebrating the lives and voices of suffragistas who worked tirelessly for equal protection and education. Just a few of those include:
  • Maria Guadalupe Evangelina de Lopez, a UCLA instructor who led rallies, gave speeches and translated pamphlets into Spanish. California granted women the right to vote in 1911.
  • Adelina Otero-Warren (first female Santa Fe school superintendent) and Arabella Romero (civic leader), who, with other suffragistas, organized for a national suffrage movement after losing their state suffrage battle in 1915.
  • Jovita Idar Vivero, a Texas journalist, activist and League of Mexican Women leader
Read about these inspirational women here, here and here.

Welcoming Week 2021
We are in the middle of Welcoming Week (September 10-19), an annual campaign for communities striving to be more welcoming places for all, including immigrants.

Kansas City is one of those communities. We even have a Welcoming Plan, which states, "At a time where the general population in the metropolitan area grew by 40 percent, and the immigrant population increased by more than 300 percent, it is imperative that we reflect on our values of welcoming and inclusion to ensure everyone feels as though Greater Kansas City is home."

The Greater Kansas City Welcoming Plan offers a roadmap of programs, policies, and activities to become an inclusive community. Read the full plan, developed by the KC Chamber and Welcoming KC, a group of 40 organizations.

How Should We Elect Our Next President?
Many thanks to those who attended our session this past Saturday on Electoral College and the National Popular Vote. One key takeaway is that it is unlikely we will move away from the Electoral College any time soon, as this would require a constitutional amendment. However, it is possible that the dissatisfaction from young voters will make an impact in the future. View the session here to learn more about the history of the Electoral College, the National Popular Vote, ranked choice voting and more. Make sure to watch the redistricting workshop that followed our panel discussion. The demo starts here.

Fall Candidate Forums
You can view the 2021 JCCC Board of Trustees Candidate Forum from Sept. 2 on YouTube to learn more about candidate positions. As other forums are held this fall, we will add them to the LWVJoCo YouTube channel. Subscribe to the channel, and stay tuned for more information!
