JoCo League logo

Hello ~~first_name~~:

TODAY is the last day to register to vote! See other key dates below, along with an invitation to our November meeting on water, this month's DEI Moment, action you can take on redistricting, and more.

Voting Plan

Important Election Dates

First - are you registered to vote? If not, TODAY is the last day to do so before the November elections.

Second, assuming you're registered to vote or will be very soon, what's your voting plan? You have options: vote-by-mail, voting early in person, and voting in person on Election Day. Pick a way, pick a day, and vote!

Request an advance ballot and check your registration at ksvotes.org. Information on your ballot, polling places, and more can be found at Vote411.org.

The Pivotal Role of Water

Many of us take water for granted. We turn on the tap and water flows. Have you ever wondered where the water in our county comes from? Or how water is funded and managed through the state of Kansas?

Join us to learn more about the important issues related to protecting and managing this precious resource.
Our session panelists are:
  • Dawn Buehler, Riverkeeper and Executive Director of Friends of the Kaw and Chair of the Kansas Water Authority
  • KS Representative Ron Highland, Chair of the Kansas House Committee on Water
  • Connie Owen, Director of the Kansas Water Office
This session is open to the public. Advanced registration is required.

DEIMoment-VotingtheActThatCounts
U.S. Rep. Barbara Lee acts on her values. In March 2021, she voted "Yes" on H.R. 1, For the People Act, helping send it to the U.S. Senate (where it still languishes).

She said: "H.R. 1 is about the right to vote, upholding the integrity of our elections, and reining in the influence of special-interest money in our politics... [It] is a critical step towards putting the power back in the hands of the people and stopping the voter suppression tactics aimed at communities of color for generations. The time is now."

Our job? Casting our ballots on November 2 and voting our values.

The Freedom to Vote Act
In September, a group of Senators led by Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Joe Manchin (D-WV) introduced the Freedom to Vote Act. The Act seeks to address campaign financing, voter access, partisan gerrymandering, and more. If you think it sounds like the For the People Act, you aren't alone. The Freedom to Vote Act includes several critical provisions of the For the People Act, which has not been passed. It also contains some concessions that were needed to gain broader support. You can learn more about this new Act here, and about the League's support for the Act here.

CRT Summary
Thanks to all who attended our program on Critical Race Theory on October 2, as well as our esteemed panelists, Mará Rose Williams and Tyler Curtis. A few points from the panelists:
  • Critical Race Theory is an academic concept examining the intersection of race and law.
  • CRT has been misrepresented in today's political context.
  • Many who claim opposition to CRT are not clear in what they are opposing.
You can view the recording of the panel discussion here.
