VOTE NO Postcard-Signing Party

Encourage voters to defeat the August 2 ballot amendment that would prevent Kansans from making personal health care decisions, including those about abortion.

Our goal is to write short notes to 500 voters. We have a mailing list, writing prompts and examples, and everything else you will need.

All we need is you!

When:
Thursday, July 7, 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Sunday, July 10, 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Wednesday, July 13, 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Where: Lenexa City Center Library, 8778 Penrose Lane (in City Center)

Shoot for the Moon. Even if you miss it, you will land among the stars. -Les Brown

LWVJoCo has certainly reached for the moon in June and July!

The League’s Rocket hasn’t landed yet, though! We need your help with our Church of the Resurrection Civic Engagement partnership, the first event of a two-year series of voter engagement activities. Can you help with one or two of the following shifts?

Sunday, July 3
  • 6:45 – 9:25 a.m. service at Leawood
  • 8:15 -11:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. services at Olathe
  • 11:00 – 12:45 a.m. at Overland Park
  • 8:15 – 11:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. at Downtown
It takes months of planning and hundreds of volunteers to reach the moon. Together, we can keep our rocket on course and prevent the stars from flaming out! Through our partnership with the LWVJoCo and Church of the Resurrection as well as the Voter Network, in July alone, more than 40,000 people will be encouraged to register to vote and get to the polls and they will learn about the League! The deadline to register for the August primary in July 12 so there is no time to waste! Sign up at LWVJoCo.org/getinvolved/volunteer.

And speaking of stars, I want to acknowledge the following League Stars!

  • Volunteers who staffed voter information tables for Juneteenth events in Prairie Village, Leawood, and Overland Park. Thank you, Ann Schuster, for coordinating.

  • Co-Presidents Connie Taylor and Andrea Vieux for hosting two informative programs that reached about 100 people in June

  • Volunteers who helped make the June 25-26 launch of the COR Civic Engagement Initiative a success. Thank you, Tanya Honderick, for your leadership!

Gratefully,

Janet Milkovich

Let’s make sure everyone knows to VOTE NO on the Aug. 2 amendment to keep abortion safe and legal in Kansas!

DEI Moment

July 11 is World Population Day, a day to focus the world’s attention on population issues. In 1968, during the first International Conference on Human Rights held in Tehran, family planning was affirmed for the first time to be a human right. The Proclamation of Tehran and Resolution XVIII affirmed the basic rights of parents “to determine freely and responsibly the number and the spacing of their children… and a right to adequate education and information in this respect.” Please note that the Conference was not specifically addressing abortion, but the prevention of dangerous or unwanted pregnancies through family planning.  Poor families disproportionately bear the brunt. International Conference on Human Rights | United Nations Population Fund

Universal access to sexual and reproductive health services improves lives and is cost-effective. The Copenhagen Consensus found that for every $1 spent on universal access, $120 was saved. Post-2015 Consensus: Population and Demography Assessment, Kohler Behrman

As Kansans look to the August 2 primary election and the Constitutional Amendment that all voters can vote upon regardless of party affiliation, we must ask ourselves the following questions:

  • Do ALL Kansans have universal access to sexual and reproductive health services?

  • If passed, how will the Constitutional Amendment on the August 2 ballot impact universal access to these services?

  • What are the next steps we must take to ensure universal access to sexual and reproductive health services AND the education and information needed for ALL Kansas residents?

The League of Women Voters of Johnson County urges Kansans to Vote NO on August 2.  Here is the information on our website and ways you can help:
