Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month starts this week

Hispanic Heritage Month, a celebration of the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America, runs September 15 through October 15.

Celebrate this weekend at the Fiesta Hispana, sponsored by the Greater Kansas City Hispanic Heritage Committee. This event runs Friday through Sunday on the Barney Allis Plaza at 12th and Central in downtown Kansas City.
Visit kcfiestahispana.com to learn more.

On September 24 from 12:00 - 6:00 p.m., attend the Latino Arts Festival 2022 at the Nerman Museum on the JCCC campus. Community creators will be sharing their art, music, food, and passion.

In October, visit the Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center for another celebration. They are hosting a free celebration on Wednesday, October 12, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.

DEI Moment - Environmental Justice

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines environmental justice as "the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, national origin, or income, with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations and policies." Unfortunately, multiple studies have shown that low-income, immigrant and minority groups are disproportionately affected by poor air quality, lack of clean water, exposure to pollutants and lead exposure.

Learn more about the impact of pollutants in our area of the country in the report, Environmental Racism in the Heartland, published by CleanAirNow and the Union of Concerned Scientists.

πŸ—³ Disability Voting Rights Week
In 2020, an estimated 38 million people with disabilities were eligible to vote. This week is Disability Voting Rights Week, and you can learn more about increasing the power of people with disabilities at www.aapd.com/dvrw.

πŸ—“ NVRD at JCCC
September 20 is National Voter Registration Day (NVRD), and the League is collaborating with Loud Light and several Johnson County Community College (JCCC) groups on an event at the JCCC food court. There will be trivia about the Constitution, a presentation on the power of the youth vote, voter registration encouragements, pocket Constitutions, and popsicles. Future events and challenges will be announced.

πŸ™πŸΌ Take action on the ERA
The Senate has yet to vote on SJ Res 1/HJ Res 17 - the bill that would remove the time limit imposed on the Equal Rights Amendment and any ambiguity around the Amendment's validity. Ask your Senators to request that Senate Majority Leader Schumer bring the bill to a vote.

βœ… Take the pledge
Women deserve to have our priorities taken seriously by lawmakers. In November, we are going to demand it. When women vote, we win. Put leaders on notice that women are voting. Sign the pledge that you will vote.

πŸ‘ Observers needed
We have a dedicated team of Observers, but we can always use more. Observers volunteer to watch the meetings of an elected body and then make a brief report for The VOTER newsletter. We currently have openings for Observers for the Board of County Commissioners, the JCCC Board of Trustees, the JoCo Parks & Recreation Board, and the City Councils for Overland Park, Olathe, Shawnee, and others. Email Eileen Marshall at emmarshall59@outlook.com to learn more. Not a member? Join here!

🌻 In memoriam
We are sad to share that lifetime League member Jane Hess (Margaret Jane Kirkpatrick Hess) passed away on July 24, 2022. Jane first joined the League of Women Voters at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota in 1946. She once said, "I like that the League studies issues and that it is bipartisan. I always felt I needed to contribute to the community where I lived. League was one way I did that." We are thankful for Jane's contributions. You can read her obituary here.
