Join us Oct. 13

This November, KS voters will be asked whether or not to retain judges, including six of the seven Kansas Supreme Court Justices. This vote will determine the make-up of the state's highest court, and could have a monumental impact on the future of Kansas policy. 

 
Join us to hear from Chief Justice Marla Luckert, Justice Evelyn Wilson, and Justice Melissa Taylor Standridge of the Kansas Supreme Court and to learn more about the retention vote on November 8.

The election is almost here - are you ready?

As we get close to the mid-term election, we wanted to share some key dates:
🗓 October 18 - last day to register
🗓 October 19 - advance voting by mail begins
🗓 October 22 - advance voting in person begins
🗓 Nov 1 - deadline to request an advance ballot
🗓 Nov 7 - advance voting closes
🗓 Nov 8 - THE GENERAL ELECTION

Bridging the Gap - A Dialogue on Social Equity

Join the conversation with local LGBTQ+ leaders and activists as we discuss ways to be a better ally and break through societal norms. Panelists include:

  • Inoru Morris, founder of the Midwest Rainbow Institute and PhD student at KU's School of Public Affairs
  • Taryn Jones, licensed social worker and volunteer manager at Jewish Family Services and board member at Equality KC and Midwest Rainbow Institute
  • Heather Rubesch, an advisor for Q-space, chair of the Johnson County Parks and Recreation Commission, and mother of an out transgender adult

DEI Moment - Hispanic Heritage Month
It's not too late to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month! On Wednesday, October 12, 6-8 p.m., the Johnson County Arts and Heritage Center will host an evening celebrating Kansas City's rich Latino history. This is a free event and no registration is required. Learn more here. If you prefer to celebrate in the comfort of your own home, the Kansas City, KS Library has created an online timeline highlighting the struggles and triumphs of Hispanic-Latino Americans throughout history beginning with the Mexican American War in 1846. 🏛 Congressional update
The US House passed the bipartisan Presidential Electoral Reform Act on September 21 (see US League commentary here). This bill would strengthen the Electoral Count Act and protect against further insurrections like the one this past January. The US Senate also simultaneously passed the Electoral Count Reform and Presidential Transition Improvement Act out of the Senate Rules Committee on September 27. (Read more on the latter Act here.) 
 
⚖️ New litigation tracking resource
The national League has published a new resource you can use to track and learn more about important litigation. This new digital Legal Center offers information on current cases on voting rights, abortion access, redistricting and more. Cases will be added as work progresses.

Boost your civic knowledge with an online offering from the Johnson County Library - Civics 101: Election Security. This free session will examine the security of our elections with Johnson County Election Commissioner Fred Sherman. Register here.
