WomensHistoryMonth2023

In this DEI Moment, we celebrate Women's History Month - a designated time to study and observe the vital role women have played throughout American history.

Here are a few ways you can participate.

💻 Read the national LWV's blog post on creating a safe digital space for women. 85% of women globally have experienced or witnessed digital violence against other women. The blog provides additional stats on women in tech and offers resources to fight for digital equity.

👩‍💻 Are you a woman in tech? Connect with other women in tech through Kansas City Women in Technology, or mentor girls in STEM through that organization or the KC STEM Alliance.

📅 Join one of the many local events celebrating Women's History Month around town. Learn more at IN Kansas City

Stay engaged and informed

👀 Follow the legislature and local politics
Just a reminder - LWVJoCo members observe local political meetings, and you can read up on their latest observations here. In addition, you can follow the latest KS legislature news in a variety of ways, including via the Kansas Rural Center's Policy Watch updates and the Legislature's own livestream.
Bills to watch include (but are not limited to):
  • Election bills: SB 208, 209, and 210
  • Education bills: HB 2048 and 2218
  • Water committee: HB 2279, 2172, 2480, and 686
🗳️ Report on EO 14019 (access to voting)
Just over two years ago, President Biden signed Executive Order 14019 Promoting Access to Voting. This order has the potential to make registration and voting more accessible to millions of Americans. The national LWV has published a progress report on this EO, in partnership with a number of other organizations. The organizations note that over 63 million eligible voters were not registered to vote during the last presidential election - many of those people of color. They note the progress, or lack thereof, across multiple federal organizations in supporting this EO. Read the full report here.

💰Take action on dark money
Last month, the DISCLOSE Act was reintroduced to both houses of Congress to provide transparency around campaign money. This Act has been put forth multiple times in the past, but has yet to be passed. You can read more about the Act in this archived article from The Brennan Center, and you can contact your representatives with this easy form via the national League.
