Starting the last week of May, registered voters in Johnson County will start receiving advance ballot applications for the August and November elections. In response to the pandemic, the Johnson County Election Office mailed advance voting applications to every voter in the county.
The applications will be pre-filled with the voter’s name, date of birth, residential address, and mailing address. Voters will only need to provide their Kansas driver’s license or identification card number and signature on the applications.
For security purposes, voter signatures are verified at every step of the advance voting by mail process. Voters are encouraged to provide a quality signature on the applications.
Unaffiliated voters who want to vote in the Democratic or Republican Party primary elections in August must affiliate with that party. The applications being mailed to unaffiliated voters include the option to affiliate with a party by completing a party affiliation declaration.
Voters can return the applications three ways:
- By mail: The applications can be folded into a self-addressed envelope and mailed to the Election Office (stamp required).
- To the 24-hour, drive-through ballot boxes at the Election Office: The ballot boxes are located at 2101 E. Kansas City Road in Olathe.
- By email: A photo or scan of the applications can be sent to votebymail@jocogov.org.
Voters who return the applications will be mailed ballots for the August 4 primary and November 3 general elections. Ballots will begin mailing three weeks before Election Day.
In-person voting will also be available in August and November. In addition to Election Day polling locations, there will be two weeks of advance voting at seven locations before each election. Voters who choose to vote in person after applying to vote by mail will be required to vote a provisional ballot.
