The event, Gun Safety Impacts Public Health, features Judy Sherry, president and founder of
Grandparents for Gun Safety, and Mark McCormick, award winning journalist and director of
strategic communications for the ACLU of Kansas. Jennifer Day, vice president with the League
of Women Voters of Johnson County (LWVJoCo), will moderate.
“Gun safety is such a timely issue,” said Janet Milkovich, co-president with LWVJoCo. “We’ve
seen the devastating effects of gun violence. From physical impacts to mental health, it can be
traumatic to a community. We believe the proliferation of semi-automatic and automatic
weapons is a major health and safety threat to the citizens of this country.”
“We were happy to partner with Grandparents for Gun Safety to request mayors and city
councils throughout Johnson County to recognize this important issue and to proclaim June 2 as
National Gun Violence Awareness Day,” Milkovich continued.
